Week 3 workshop: Kendall Rule Set
Original Kendall Rule Set
Race to the end / Destination
In this workshop we will explore one of the simplest gameplay concepts: the so-called “race to an end”.
We won’t make a new game from scratch, though, but try to “reconstruct” a possible rule set to give new life to a few thousand years old game: Senet
See attached rules set proposed by historian Kendall as an example.
Requirements:
- Two sets of 7 pawns, white and black
- Have to use Senet original board design
- Use any combination of dice you see appropriate for the game
- Give meaning to each painted square
- Can have both a 1 and 2 player mode
- Decide condition for winning
- Work in small teams (2 to 4. 3 members is ideal for most workshops)
New Kendall Rule Set:
-At the beginning of the game, each player's seven pieces take turns on the 14th square. In addition, there is a barracks, the detailed functions of the barracks will be explained later.
-15 squares are the starting point, this square has a symbol of "life" ankh.
-Pawns move according to the four sticks thrown, the unmarked side gets 1 point, and the marked side gets 5 points if it appears at the same time.
-Before the decision throw of moving points, the two players first guess the position of the piece to be started, the larger side chooses first, the smaller side chooses later. (Only the color of your own side can be selected.)
-When a pawn reaches a square already occupied by the opponent, they must switch positions.
-When a pawn moves to the 27th square and returns to rebirth place, the pawn gains a new ability, which gives him a eliminate ability (the ability is also taken away when the opponent pawn switches its places), In the following game, the opponent's pawns do not exchange positions when they contact, but directly eliminate the opponent's pawns, and the eliminated pawns will enter the barracks to rest.
-For resting pawns in a Camp: A pawns in a camp can return to the board only if they throw 5 points or if no pawns move on the field, and can only stay on the 15th square if they throw any number of 1-5 points (s).
-Special blocks have the following effects on the game:
• 15: House of Rebirth, starting square and the return square for the pawns reaching square number 27.
• 26: House of Happiness, all pawns finish a move here, even if they threw enough to move past it.
• 27: House of Water, any pawn finishing a move on this square must go back to The House of Rebirth.
• 28: House of the Three Truths, a pawn landing here may only leave the board if a three is thrown.
• 29: House of the Re-Atoum, a pawn landing here may only leave the board if a two is thrown
